December Gardening Advice and Tips
Winter is here and the days are the shortest during this month, there shouldn't be much left to do.
Jobs For December
- Check your winter protection is secure
- Check greenhouse heaters are working
- Insulate outdoor taps and check bird baths are not frozen
- Prune over grown apples trees
- Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding
- Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplanted
- Take hardwood cuttings
- Geum - Cut back
- Hellebores - can plant any time of the year if available in garden centres
- Pond Plants - Pysostegia virginiana - ensure plant is submerged for winter
- Fatsia japonica will start to fruit
- Reduce watering of houseplants
